Project 5

In this piece I want to show the people who strongly influenced me. Specifically, those in my intensive outpatient therapy group. This was an experience that changed my life and allowed me to meet people who would change how I saw myself. I have struggled with seeing myself in a positive light for many years now. This was a turning point for me in that view. We learned how each of us are so similar even though we have different issues we were able to connect on a deeper level.
For the start of the project I feel it is important to get rid of their faces and any skin tones. This is done for two reasons, the first is to protect their identity because of the context in which this project is done in. Secondly, I removed the body/ any skin tones because this piece is about body image and how each of us have struggled with that is some way. By removing the body I wanted to make a statement on how the outward appearance is not the only important part of a person. This will represent how our bodies do not define the kind of person we are. I want to use a mixture of illustration and photos. Each person is a photo with different layers making them just a solid image.
Then I pulled different colors from their skin tone and overlay a gradient on each photo.
The next step in this project is to get the plexi-glass or glass and etch my illustration of the flowers on the glass. Each flower is a representation of each person. I choose the flowers because of their delicacy as well as the glass. Both represent the delicacy of each our own journeys and recovery.
When talking to my peer mentor she said “I really like the different shades of brown and the way all the silhouettes kind of fit together. I don't really know what is on the right hand side and you might need something in the background.” To address these comments I know for the background I wanted it to either be plain or white due to the glass that I will put over it. I think I was going for more of an abstract look with the people I wanted a more stylized look.
For the overall design most of the experimentation comes from the overlay of glass and etching. Some of the challenges that I had came from the layout of the silhouette and the illustration aspect. For each of these I had to use some of the skills that I have learned throughout the course. These include the use of photoshop overall and how I can manipulate the images. I have seen my ability to plan out a project much easier knowing how to use the program. I also found that using illustrator has become slightly easier even though I still have a lot to learn, I feel I have a better grasp on it.
