Project Three: Personal Artifact

I choose some souvenirs I brought back from my mission trip to Costa Rica as my artifacts. It is my hope that through my final, you experience a little taste of my week in Costa.

I choose to focus on the coffee wheel (bottom left photo). These are a big part of Costa Rican culture as one of their biggest commodities is coffee. Decorating these huge stone slabs became one of their main art forms. Each village has typically one artist and as they grow older they select a younger member of the community to train in the art. The photo to the left is the apprentice in training that we observed the first day in CR.

Anyway, I chose to focus on the coffee wheel because this trip has become one of the biggest parts of my personal history. In order to display some photos from the trip, I made clipping masks on the wheel.

I also had the opportunity to work in an orphanage while I was there. So, I included a lot of images of the children, though none complete because I legally can't. The little guy partially pictured is Carlitos.

I also had the opportunity to make my own art while in CR. This is a small mural I did which was the start of a much bigger project at the orphanage. Other images of food and currency are also included.
