Project 1: Leah Roper

To begin this project, I began searching different types of stoves.  I came across many different views and angles, although I decided to choose the fish eye view.  I thought this would give more dimension to the piece and add more individuality.

After deciding which image to use, I began to trace the original image, while adding key components that is on my oven at home, like the dials at the top to control the heat.  I also added in some of my own work that I wanted to incorporate and combined all of these elements in the same page.

After creating these lines, I began filling them in while still playing with the grey scale in order to make things look as real as possible.

I then came to my final piece which incorporated both the original image, as well as my own art.

For this piece I pursued surrealism and wanted to leave things to the imagination, as well as also having a deeper meaning of an unconscious mind.  When someone thinks of a kitchen, its most likely a spotless area thats decorated with tiny salt and pepper shakers and plants to cook with.  I wanted to steer away from this idea and dig deeper into what an alternate universe would have in a kitchen.  The kitchen I created is filthy, broken down, and obviously not safe to use due to the mans head sticking out of the burner and the octopus leg hanging from the vent.  Although there isn't an underlying meaning of hope for the world, there is a hope for both creativity and individuality.  In the art community, it is easy to be persuaded to only stick to one style in order to please a certain audience, when we all know we can create as far out and the most craziest things we can come up with.  Explore your creativity and see what you can come up with.
